Why has the NZ dollar rallied against the US dollar?

Written by Sam Coxhead on October 13th, 2011.      0 comments

5:50 PM (NZT) The New Zealand dollar has benefitting greatly from the rushed exit by investors from the US dollar this week (investors have sold USD, bought growth assets, of which the NZD is one). The quick change in sentiment has been partly driven by more positive sentiment with regards to the Euro zone debt issues, and partly by the improved confidence in the US economy. The move has become self fulfilling, as “stop loss” exiting of the US dollar positions, have pushed squeezed further investors out. Whether or not the momentum has eased for the time being remains to be seen. Certainly there still remain multiple levels of risk to the global economy, and how these play out will no doubt be the primary driver over the coming weeks. On the topside, the .8020 level will present some resistance in the short term.
